Chapter Twenty

Ten minutes to go, and there was still no sign of help. Marie was confident that she had done all she could, and that someone would come to their defense. But, as the minutes and seconds wound down, the less confident she felt. She had spent the last fifty minutes mindlessly watching the images on the monitor repeat and repeat. Every television in the world had the same series of rotating images. The world’s attention was on Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado.

Marie had grabbed a breakfast burrito from the mess hall. It laid half-eaten on the desk where she sat. However, there were four empty soda cans in front of her and her bladder was full, but there was no way she would leave her chair. What happened in the next ten minutes would be a defining moment in the history of the planet Earth. Would the people of Earth stand resolute against an alien aggressor? Or would they insist on giving in to their demands. Marie was nervous about that. Because it was a global issue, every leader of every country had a say in what should happen. If enough of those leaders said to give up the rune, the general would have no other option but to follow through with the order.

Marie would be devastated if she were forced to hand over the rune. She had seen just a small fraction of the rune’s secrets, and it had already allowed her to connect with an alien species. She couldn’t even begin to imagine all of the wonders that lay within the small stone. The thought of losing the rune was just too hard to think about. Worse yet, Marie would have to be the one to tell Neil when—if—he ever got out of the hospital. She was afraid that he’d never forgive her. Marie looked up at a countdown clock affixed to the wall. Eight minutes to go.

“Marie,” said a voice.

Marie felt her eyes widen and she looked over at the desk next to her. A young airwoman stared into a large monitor. When she sensed that she was being watched, she looked over toward Marie, and removed her headset.

“Can I help you?” asked the woman.

“Did you call me?” Marie asked.

“No ma’am,” the woman said as she replaced her headset and turned back to her monitor.

Marie looked the desk next to her. It was empty. She turned around and saw Dr. Lowell talking to Airman McNair, toward the rear of the command center. There was no one else around. The general was still in the situation room discussing the fate of the rune.

Marie felt a wave of exhaustion move through her body. She had been awake for almost twenty-eight straight hours, and simply had nothing more to give. She was so exhausted, that she was hearing voices in her head. Not just one voice, but several of them. Some were deep, bass filled voices. Others were high-pitched female voices, but they all said the same thing. “We hear you.”

Then, one voice cut through them all.
